Late to the Party: Deadpool & Zootopia

Zootopia

While I waited what felt like forever to see Deadpool, I had no interest in seeing Zootopia, the latest movie from Disney Animation Studios. Actually I only ended up seeing it after a friend cashed in her “you made me see Fantastic Four” chip. Zootopia tells the story of Judy Hopps, the first Rabbit in this animal filled world to join the ranks of the Zootopia Police Department. We’ve reached a comfortable status quo in animated movies with one of two movies a year standing out for ingenuity while the rest retread old ground. Zootopia doesn’t really stand out much for it’s plot but the way it tells that story is as fun and clever as you could hope. With the genre taking on so much dead weight each year, Zootopia rises towards the top of the list of recent animated films. (But don’t let anyone tell you it was better than Inside Out).

Deadpool

A month before one audience group fawned over Zootopia, a decidedly different group flocked to see Deadpool. We traveled a rocky road to finally reach the movie’s release but the final product was about as good as we could hope for (especially coming from the topsy-turvy Fox). There may be no better casting in the superhero world than Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool (as this Deadpool I mean. Not the sinful one from X-Men Origins: Wolverine). A lot has already been said about Reynolds’s performance and he deserves all the praise. Especially since he helped get the movie off the ground in the first place. I’m already looking forward to the sequel more than almost any other comic movie. More than I was X-Men: Apocalypse and almost as much as the upcoming Doctor Strange which currently stands as my most anticipated comic-book movie along with Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2. The comicbook movie genre has become very crowded but with all the doom and gloom (eg Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) Deadpool is a more than welcome addition.
