Today marks the release of the third movie in the Divergent Series. Supposedly this one is “the best” in the series which honestly disappoints me. The first Divergent movie was so incredibly awful that it was a blast to watch and I somehow found myself using it as a means to defend movie adaptations (in a roundabout way). Sadly the follow-up Insurgent failed to live up to the unintentionally fun absurdity of the first and left us more bored than awed. I don’t plan to see Allegiant in theaters but I’m hoping the filmmakers gave up their attempts to make something worthy of comparison to the better Hunger Games and Harry Potter films and instead push the film back towards the so-bad-its-good area. You have your niche Divergent, stick with it.
Here are three great quotes from that first movie which showcase the writing that hooked me two years ago:
Four: I don’t want to be just one thing. I can’t be. I want to be brave, and I want to be selfless, intelligent, and honest and kind. Well, I’m still working on kind.
Tori: You’re different. You don’t fit into a category. They can’t control you. They call it Divergent. You can’t let them find out about you.
Beatrice ‘Katniss’ Prior: Don’t try and define me.
Thanks for reading!
