Welcome back to the Game of Thrones character tournament! We’re whittling down the characters quickly as we press on to the Round of 16. It looks like all the technical problems of the first round were resolved and Round 2 voting went smoothly.
Voting seemed to follow the Game of Thrones rule of “strength above all.” Most of the fighters prevailed over their opponents, whether they were the behind-the scenes string pullers (eg. Ygritte over Petyr Baelish, Robb Stark over Varys, Loras Tyrell over Cersei Lannister), Hodor-riders (Stannis over Bran), bookworms/wizards (Mance Rayder over Sam Tarly), or after-school tutors (Arya over Shireen Baratheon). Drogon, without question the most powerful character left, continues to mock my ability to seed, advancing into the round of 16 despite his #15 seed.
The question of strength may come into question again if Drogon and Tyrion both advance to the Blackwater Bay Regional Finals. Those two were some of the most definitive winners of Round 2 but may face troubles with fan favorites Bronn and Robb Stark. Bronn and Arya Stark won their trials with the strongest showing, taking 93% and 90% of the vote respectively.
The biggest surprise of the round was after-school pupil Davos Seaworth beating #1 seed Daenarys Targaryen, and fellow #1 seed Cersei Lannister losing to Loras Tyrell. To be honest, I’m a little relieved I don’t have to type Dany’s name anymore. I have to google it every time. (Danaerys? Daenaerys Taergaeryen?) And now we get a Davos vs. Stannis showdown. The one I wanted last episode.
Lannisters Left: Jaime, Tyrion
Lannisters Out: Cersei, Tywin, Lancel
Baratheons Left: Stannis
Baratheons Out: Selyse, Tommen, Robert, Joffrey, Shireen
Starks Left: Robb, Arya
Starks Out: Catelyn, Rickon, Talisa, Bran, Eddard, Sansa
Tyrells Left: Loras, Margaery
Tyrells Out: Olenna
Notable Round 3 Matchups:
(1) Tyrion Lannister vs. (5) Bronn
(1) Jon Snow vs. (4) Tormund Giantsbane
(4) Stannis Baratheon vs. (9) Davos Seaworth
Let the gods decide! Round 4 starts tomorrow.
Voting Guidelines (detailed more in the Round 1 entry): In each round vote for your favorite character. You are not neccesarily voting for who would win in a one-on-one fight (if that were true, The Night’s King and Drogon, a pair of #15 seeds, would roll into the finals). Instead, vote for your favorite character, however you want to decide that. Many people have chosen to vote based on fighting prowess anyway since these characters get the best fight scenes.
